Tahunanui, Nelson, NZ

Tahunanui
Tahunanui beach is known to be one of the safest swimming beaches in NZ and was recently commended by Conde Nast magazine.

Nelson's Rocks road is one of the scenic gems of the region; running from the beach, past historic Haulashore Island and Wakefield Quay to Port Nelson and the start of the Boulder bank.

Tahunanui and the world class attractions of Tahunanui Beach and Nelson Waterfront are under threat from proposed roading options. Tahunanui and the world class attractions of Tahunanui Beach and Nelson Waterfront are under threat from proposed roading options.

The Arterial Traffic Study originally put forward four options for improving traffic flows in and out of Nelson. These have now been reduced to two. Option A - clearways through Tahunanui, the waterfront and Waimea Road - and Option B - a new arterial road down St. Vincent St. Option A would involve increasing the traffic capacity to three lanes through the heart of Tahunanui, along Rocks Road and past Nelson's historic Wakefield Quay.

The road through Tahunanui and along the waterfront is currently designated as a State Highway, meaning it is the route heavy trucks have to use in and out of the city. SH6 has already severed the community of Tahunanui, reduced the scenic appeal of the beach and waterfront and created significant safety issues. It is a nightmare for pedestrians and cyclists.

Increasing traffic capacity on this route would make this situation far worse. It would devastate Tahunanui, it's beach and the iconic waterfront. This area needs heavy traffic removed and traffic reduced, not increased.
